At the National Convention of the Military Order of the Purple Heart in Las Vegas, the Patriot members and the Ladies Auxiliary were surprised

when one of their fellow Patriots, National Legislative Director Hershel Gober, took to the stage and performed one the many songs he wrote about his experiences during two combat tours in Vietnam.  He recorded the songs in 1969.  At the Convention, he gave a copy of his original album, The Proud American, to the MOPH Ladies Auxiliary for their charity auction where it sold for $100.00.  Other Patriots asked if they could get a copy of the album, so he had it re-mastered on a CD for sale, with all proceeds to go to the Purple Heart Foundation.  The album features just Hershel and his guitar and is classic folk music.  The album will be made available to Patriots through the MOPH website in the near future.

What many in the audience did not know is that prior to and during his military service Hershel had recording contracts with four recording companies, including Ace Records, Challenge Records (owned by cowboy movie star Gene Autry), ABC Records, TeePee Records and finally Patriot Records.  Hershel has over thirty songs registered in the Library of Congress and was featured in an ABC Television chapter of "ABC Scope" narrated by Howard K. Smith in December 1966 entitled "The Singing Soldier".  During the period 1966 - 1969 he appeared on behalf of the Army Recruiting Command on many Today Shows, Tonight Shows, The Mike Douglas Show, with Rosemary Clooney, and Don O'Neill's Breakfast Club, and many others.  He has performed for three US Presidents.

In addition to his service in the US Marines and US Army, with over 20 years of active duty, Hershel Served as the Deputy/Acting Secretary of the US Department of Veterans Affairs from 1993 until 2001.  He has served as the MOPH National Legislative Director since 2002.

While serving in Germany in the early sixties he was part of a four man impromptu musical group that included Kris Kristofferson.  Kris was then an Army Captain and helicopter pilot.
